iPhone

My Turbo SIM arrived today and with little effort whatsoever I had my iPhone working fine with my carrier, O2 Ireland. Everything works, calls/SMS/data (GPRS at an amazing 35kbps). Here’s some snaps:

    Hi Jason
    First, congratulations
    I´ve a question.
    Is it necessary to have AT&T contract or prepaid in order to realize the hack?
    Apologize, my english is not very good
    thanks in advance
    Chao!!

  2. Jason Madigan Says:

    Nope, you don’t need an AT&T account of any kind. All you need is the AT&T SIM which came with the iPhone and a Turbo SIM. In theory you don’t even need the AT&T SIM, just an AT&T ICCID/IMSI.

  3. iKons Says:

    Thanks a lot Jason
    Here, in Spain is not possible to have a contract to AT&T.

  4. iKons Says:

    Jason,
    I would like to know which activation method is suitable in order to use TSIM after that.
    I read something about “brick radio” item of iPhone. I´m not sure.
    Thanks
    Constancio

  5. Jason Madigan Says:

    Constancio,

    When activating your iPhone initially, use the at&t SIM which came with the iPhone and use iASign to activate (there’s a few guides around for this, just Google for “iASign”). Once this is done you can use your Turbo SIM using one of the guides out there.

  6. iKons Says:

    Thanks, thank you very much, Jason :DD
    There is not much information into spanish about TSIM and how to hack.

    Thanks a lot
    Chao!!

  7. Brian Says:

    Hi Jason good to see others in Ireland got it working had mine and a friends up and running on Tuesday with Turbosims. Can confirm working with Vodfone, but would not work with Three, I have had a similar problem with 3 sims not working in any 2G phone. Well hope you are enjoying your iPhone as much as I am.

  8. Jason Madigan Says:

    Good to hear Brian. I may check out a Meteor SIM sometime this week to see if their EDGE network really exists.

  9. Kenneth Keogh Says:

    Jason, I am getting an iphone from the usa and want to get it working on the o2 network. I am looking for a turbo sim and found some on ebay for around 200 sterling. Is this a good price? Is it easy to proform the crack? Thanks for your help with this.
    Slan
    Kenneth

  10. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Kenneth
    If I were you I would wait to see if iphonesimfree.com’s software unlock offering arrives this week. Engadget have confirmed it working, and I’d consider them a reasonably good source. The Turbo SIM’s themselves sold for 59 euro plus 15 euro shipping when they were still available from Bladox, and I honestly wouldn’t pay any more than this. The components used to make these devices can be had for as little as 7 euro.

  11. Mark Says:

    Hi Jason, I know this is an old post from you but I have been searching around online and I came across your site and have noticed that you have data working on the iphone, I got my iphone a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t be happier with it, I got a software unlocked one on ebay. I am on the O2 network and like you I am missing some features, visual voicemail etc. I didn’t think it was possible to get data working, I tryed O2 but as expected they couldn’t help me. Is this because you use a turbosim? Anyways, if you get this you might be able to point me in the right direction? cheers, Mark (galway)

  12. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Mark

    To setup data is pretty easy - EDGE is basically GPRS on steroids so the iPhone can use GPRS just fine regardless of what method you used to unlock it. To set it up, go into Settings>General>Network>EDGE and for the APN set it to “internet” and set the username to “user”. You can leave the password field blank.

    That’s all there is to it!

  13. Padraic Says:

    Hey Jason,

    I, like Mark, have an iPhone working fine as phone etc. Brwsing is fine too as long as I’m connected to wifi network. I can’t seem to get it working on GPRS. I’ve tried putting in the info you’ve stated above but to no avail. I’m with Vodafone. Does this make a difference? Do you know of anyhting alse I can do to try and get it working on GPRS?

    Thanks

    Padraic.

  14. John Says:

    Jason,

    I was wondering if you ever got around to testing the iPhone on Meteors edge network? As always customer service are useless and i am no better? Had you any luck?
    I bought my iPhone software unlocked from eBay and youtube has never worked. Is this a common problem?
    Will we be able to continue using our phones provided we dont update software or itunes?
    Great site!
    Cheers,
    John

  15. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Padraic,

    To enable GPRS with Vodafone you’ll need to use different settings. Go to Settings>General>Network>EDGE and for the APN set it to “live.vodafone.com” and set the username to “dublin” and the password to “dublin”

    @John

    My brother is using his iPhone with the meteor network but hasn’t been able to connect to EDGE/GPRS using the usual settings (wap.mymeteor.ie user: my pass: wap). I’ll know more about the problem when I test it sometime this weekend. To enable youtube you’ll need to patch/add some encryption keys (or if you’re using a Mac you can simply run Independence and it’ll do all the hard work for you). There’s a pretty good guide for using iBrickr on Windows to do this here:

    http://iphone.unlock.no/#Step2-Bypass-activation-and-youtube-lock

    With regards iPhone firmware updates, stick with 1.02 for the time being and refuse any iPhone updates and your phone will continue to work indefinitely.

    Hope this helps.

  16. John Says:

    Thanks Jason, i’ll try that!
    Cheers,
    John

  17. Steve Says:

    Hi Mark,

    Just wanted to say thanks, couldn’t get GPRS working until i found your post. Have an 8GB iPhone working on 02 Ireland, ver 1.0.2 and unlocked using SimFree.

    Cheers,
    Steve

  18. Steve Says:

    Sorry Jason, ment to say thanks to you, not Mark! :)

    Jason,

    I have ver v1.02 of the iPhone. I’m on the vodafone network - pay as you go. I entered the APN, username, and password that you suggested but i’m still not having any luck. When I try to navigate to a page I get:

    “Safari can’t open the page. The error was: ‘Lost network connection’ (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005)”

    Also can’t get my wifi working. The phone sees the secured wireless network, but when I enter my password: it tells me: “Unable to join network”

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance….

  24. dom Says:

    hi jason. i have an unlocked iphone. im using my o2 sim card which i used on my blackberry before this. i had edge/gprs on my blackberry but cannot connect on my new iphone, even though its the same sim. i have used the settings u said above - internet and user. but it still says - you are not subscribed to edge. any solutions? thanks dom

  25. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Sharon, Brian, Dom

    This thread should help you guys out - it has all settings listed for all Irish operators:

  26. Ciaran Houlihan Says:

    Hi Jason,

    Just wonderig if you could help me. I’ve bought an unlocked iphone from the states and it should arrive in the next day or so. Im currently on the 3 network. I’ve heard that this wont work t all. Is this true? Or will I have limited access, voice calls and texts etc?

    Thanks

    Ciarán

  27. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Ciarán,

    The iPhone won’t work with the 3 network, at all, since 3 use a UMTS network as opposed to a GSM network. The iPhone only supports GSM networks - for Ireland this means O2, Vodafone or Meteor only.

  28. Ciaran Houliahn Says:

    Thanks for quick response. Cheers for that.

  29. Ciaran Houliahn Says:

    Hi Jason,

    Thanks again for the info yesterday.

    It arrived today and I was just wondering, I didn’t get any ipod soft ware with it, my friend has an ipod, would I be able to just hook the iphone up to his pc and sync it to his PC to get some videos and songs? Or would this lock the phone?

    Do you only re-lock the phone if you update the iphone through itunes on the internet?

    Thanks

    Ciarán

  30. David Says:

    Hi Jason

    i was wondering if i bought an iphone in the uk,would i be able to get it working with o2 ireland or would it be better to buy an unlocked iphone?

    Thanks David

  31. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Ciaran,

    You should be able to safely hook the iPhone up to your friends PC, but decline any updates for the iPhone if it asks. The phone will only be re-locked if you accept an update through iTunes.

    @David,

    iPhones in the UK (1.1.2) are currently shipping with an updated bootloader, which patches out the two main ways of currently unlocking the device. If you plan to buy one you should probably buy one already unlocked or one which has 1.1.1 or earlier installed.

  32. David Says:

    Hi Jason

    Thanks alot for the advice on my last question.
    Would i need to buy a turbo sim for the iphone and would i still be able to connect to the web browser and use youtube etc?

    Thanks alot

    David

  33. Jason Madigan Says:

    David,

    Assuming you had an iPhone with 1.1.1 it could be unlocked and all of the devices functionality - including YouTube, the web browser etc. - would be available to you. Any iPhone with the 1.1.1 firmware or lower can be unlocked through software, so there’s no need for a Turbo SIM anymore.

  34. Kevin Says:

    Jason,

    I’m getting a iphone from the states next week, i assume it will be 1.1.2.
    What’s your best advice for unlocking this phone for vodafone ireland.
    Some sellers on ebay claim to have software that can unlock 1.1.2 using iPhoneSimFree.

    Any advice will be very helpful

  35. catherine Says:

    Jason

    Not used to all this technical jargon. I’m off to the states shortly & want to buy an iphone for a pressie for someone who has a company contract with Vodafone. What exactly do I need to buy?

    Thanking you in advance

  36. Mick Flynn Says:

  37. Jimmy Smyth Says:

    Hello-
    I just bought an unlocked iphone(1.1.2)on ebay-I put my Vodafone sim in,and am having some problems.
    For instance,the phone app closes as soon as I (a)-dial ‘0′on the keypad,but will make calls from the contact menu.
    The SMS app closes as soon as I open it-telling me,for instance,that I have 3 unread emails,but not allowing me to access them.
    The main problem is that I can make calls(but only from my contacts list) but cant seem to receive from Irish phones.However,I was on Skype this evening,and can dial my iPhone no problem!
    At first,I thought I had been scammed,but the iPhone is obviously unlocked,at least to some degree-can you help?

    Best regards,
    Jimmy

  38. Jason Madigan Says:

    @Jimmy,

    Using installer.app, you’re going to need to install the “iWorld” application to solve the crashing MobileSMS.app & MobilePhone.app.

  39. Jimmy Smyth Says:

    Hmmm…how do I do that? Wont it update the firmware and relock the phone?
    Thanks,
    Jimmy

  40. Jimmy Smyth Says:

    Excellent!!
    Worked a treat!
    Many thanks,

    hi jason my mother is in the states at the minute looking for an iphone for me do you have to get contract with at&t or can you get them sim free and how do i get your hack

  44. mark Says:

    Hi jason, I cant get passed the independence part of unlocking. It asks me to locate the version of the framework which i have on my desktop, i select it then open it. then i’m asked to select independence, when i open it i get error popup saying ” error copying mobile device library into independence application bundle”
    So i then tried the ringing *hash307hash and that worked until i had to put in wifi setting. What do i put i there.

    Hi Jason,

    I am reading your sterling advise with great interest as I’ve just got a iPhone and am having some problems.

    Its a USA model with 1.1.3 and was delivered unlocked,
    not the chip cut and turbo sim thingie.

    I can use it as a phone with Os Ire but have no luck when I try to connect to Safari. I get a ‘cannot connect the server’ message. I read and tried your above suggestion re EDGE> APN set to ‘internet’, Username set to ‘user’ and Password let blank but still not luck.

    I’m also wondering what is the best way of getting my numbers and contact from my Nokia 6300 to the iPhone.

    Any help would be greatly appreciate.

    Hi Lawrence
    one off payment sites only give you access to a torrent search engine and offer you software to convert video files, i made mistake of signing up its a pile of shite really bad download speeds dependent on number of people seeding file. Also they say they have applications too which is more bull they just tell u bookmark appsafari on your phone and then use applications online no good if your paying through the nose for data charges here. there all illegal if u ask me and if your gonna go down that route your better off with usenext or something similar where at least you can get really fast download speeds

  73. popple3 Says:

    Hi,
    I think the problem with Meteor’s EDGE I’d that they use a proxy server (10.85.85.85:8799).
    If you put that in SwirlyMMS, it works fine, but there’s no proxy settings for standard data. I’m gonna look into and I’ll report back if I figure it out

  74. Popple3 Says:

    I got it sorted!
    If you are on meteor, you need to call 1905 or email them and tell them your GPRS/EDGE isn’t working and that you need Meteor ISP enabled, then simply put in the following settings
    APN: isp.mymeteor.ie
    User: my
    Password: meteor

    And enjoy cheaper Internet on your iPhone (0.48c/kb instead of 2c/kb)

    If they refuse to, call again and say you want to use your phone as a modem on your PC, it just depends on who you get through to really
